All about handmade lip balm

In this article I am going to focus on lip care products- specifically the lip balm. With tons of options available for lipstick, lip colours/pigments or lip liners which offer noticeable benefits in terms of colour, look, gloss etc what benefit does the teeny tiny lip balm offer? Let me list those down before we deep dive into the topic-

💋 No Dry & Chapped Looking Lips
💋 Soft and Smooth Canvas for Lip Color
💋 Moisturizes and hydrates lips
💋 Protection Against the Sun

There are many lip balms on the market, potentially providing more confusion than choice. One says natural, one doesn’t, one is being endorsed by a celebrity and another is available in exotic flavours. Where should you start? It’s important that you don’t get lost and sold on attractive labels and novelty packaging in lieu of being educated on what to look for in a lip balm product, what to be aware of, and understanding the topic from all angles. The real questions focus on topics like what are its ingredients. Does it contain chemicals or petroleum products? And, does it contain ingredients shown to be effective?

The cosmetic industry generally regulates itself which means you need to be on the ball and do your own research so you’re aware of the toxic ingredients. Synthetic balms may include alcohol, manufactured waxes, petrochemicals, artificial skin softeners, silicon dioxide, and other manufactured chemicals. First and foremost, purity and quality are your most important factors in choosing all health products, lip balm is no exception.

Let me walk you through the contents in my lip balms and how I formulate the recipe for it. It’s Going On Your Lips – hence any chemical would be a straight no! Handmade lip balm ingredient blend is able to provide 100% benefit with no detracting aspects. Natural ingredients include beeswax, Jojoba oil, coconut oil, olive oil, antioxidants in the form of Vitamin E, vitamin C and grapeseed oil. Butters like mango butter, cocoa butter, Shea butter, Kokum butter provides moisturizing effects and fragrant notes. An optional ingredient can be zinc oxide, a substance known to offer sun protection.

Formulating a lip balm recipe-
A combination of 50-60% wax, 15-20% butters, approx 10% oils, essential oils, fragrance oils or flavour oils, lip safe pigments or micas for colour works well in the Indian climatic conditions.

So the next time you are thinking of treating your lips, be smart and aware and give your lips the natural, chemical free care it deserves!
