With the season of Gifting and lights approaching, Here is a quick and easy way to learn how to make your own candles. Candles are customizable in terms of shape, size , color and fragrance and a great handmade gift to a dear one.

Ingredients needed :  Wax ( could be Paraffin or Soy wax or Beeswax ) , candle wicks, these are usually ready but you can also make it with cotton thread, Container or mould , double boiler, weighing machine. Raw materials available here. Soy Wax Candle Making Kit .

Keep the preparation clean and flat, keep paper towels or old news papers handy . Use a different/dedicated vessel for melting wax seperate from the cooking one.

1 . Measure the wax

The best way to measure the wax is by weight how much your mould or container can take, if no weighing machine is available then take around double of wax in the container or mould.

2. Melting

Use a double boiler and melt the wax, take care that the wax doesnt fall out or stick to other vessels . You can use the old news papers in the preparation area so the wax wont stick to the ground incase it spills. Keep stirring the wax as it melts to speed up the melting process.

3. Additives

After the wax is melted and before it is ready to pour , now is the time to add additives such as color , fragrance.  For colours you can use a piece of wax crayon , it is prefereable to use Non toxic wax crayons .

4. Attach the wick

Attach the wick to the bottom of the container or mould . Best way to do is to dip the wick in melted wax and put it in the mould in the centre and let is stick for 3-5 mins .

5. Pour

Pour the melted wax slowly and fill till the needed height.  Ensure that the wick doesnt move and stays at the centre. You can secure the wick using a hair pin or clip so it doesnt move.

6 Finish

Wait for an hour or two till the wax hardens. The duration will depend on the amount of wax and size of mould .  Cut the wick to the right size .
