Quinoa is a species of the goose-foot genus (Chenopodium quinoa), a grain crop grown primarily for its edible seeds.

Quinoa originated in the Andean region where it was domesticated 3,000 to 4,000 years ago for human consumption and later it spread to Europe, North America, Asia and Africa.

Technically quinoa is a pseudo-cereal. It can seamlessly be substituted as a cereal in many dishes. It is comprehensive in nutrition, with a good profile of essential amino acids and micronutrients. The wonderful attribute of quinoa is its low glycaemic load, thus making it a good choice for those who need to control their blood sugar. From paediatrics and geriatrics, quinoa is a wonderful source of nutrition.

UN-FAO declared Quinoa as crop of the year in 2013. The crop was defined in its agro technology and seeds were shared across the nation to farmers by CSIR-CFTRI in 2014.
